Research towards an acceptable HIV cure for everyone, worldwide
Around 38 million people worldwide are living with HIV. About 75% of them take lifelong HIV medication. This medication keeps HIV under control by stopping the virus from making new copies and spreading through the body.
To find a cure for HIV, researchers need to find safe ways to activate HIV that is hiding in the body, without allowing the virus to spread.
How HIV responds to these approaches can differ between people. For example, there can be differences between people with North American or Western European backgrounds and people with African backgrounds. There can also be differences between men, women, and transgender people. HIV itself also exists in different subtypes, including HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, and D.
Until now, much HIV cure research has focused on men who have sex with men from North American and Western European backgrounds. Many people in this group have HIV-1 subtype B. However, only around 12% of people living with HIV worldwide have this subtype.
That is why our research focuses mainly on HIV-1 subtypes A, C, and D, and to a lesser extent subtype B. By including these different subtypes, our research can better represent around 75% of people living with HIV worldwide.
Together with people living with HIV, scientists, researchers, and healthcare professionals, we are working towards an acceptable HIV cure for everyone, everywhere.

To build and maintain international networks and collaborations between researchers from different fields.
To learn from working together across different countries, communities, and areas of expertise, and use these lessons to improve HIV cure research.
